some lovely fanart
I love this Vorkosigan playing card set. For those who can't read the Russian pop-up text:

Hearts: Gregor - Aral - Cordelia - Ivan
Spades: Ryoval - Vordarian - Cavilo - Ges
Diamonds: Rian - Bel - Taura - Onyx
Clubs: Illyan - Dag Benin - Elli - Byerly

And Miles is, of course, the Joker.

There are a few that don't fit for me - I'd have Dag Benin as the King of Diamonds, Bel as the Jack of Diamonds, and Duv Galeni as the King of Clubs. But otherwise they are perfect.

Ooh, thank you very much for the link! This is a great idea (especially Miles as the Joker!), but I agree with you wholeheartedly on Galeni needing to be the King of Clubs. I don't know that I would've gone with this theme for diamonds, but given the one they've got going, Dag Benin as King and Bel as Jack makes a lot of sense (and maybe Nicole/a Quaddie for Ace if both Dag and Rian would make it a surfeit of Cetas...)

Alys, of course, would also make a good Queen of Diamonds. :-)
I want this deck of cards now...

Alys was my first though for Queen of Diamonds, but as I started trying to assemble a suit (along the lines of prosperity / material wealth / worldly standing, by extension of pentacles), it occurred to me Laisa would be another excellent candidate, and it's a very Komarran suit... (I'm thinking Shiv Arqua for King of Diamonds and one of the Duronas for the Ace. Mark would make a pretty good Jack of Diamonds, but I would really want him as a second joker in the deck instead :)

ETA: Or maybe Laisa as the *Ace* of Diamonds, symbolizing Komarr the way Gregor as the Ace of Hearts symbolizes Barrayar, and Alys as the Queen on Diamonds, and Raven Durona as the Jack, with Shiv as King still. And that way we've got Barrayar, Komarr, Escobar (Durona Group), and Jackson's Whole represented, for interplanetary commerce...

But I would love to have a deck of Vorkosigan cards regardless of face card quibbles, especially with such lovely art :)

Laisa as the Ace of Diamonds and Alys as the Queen - yes! Perfect in every respect (the fact that Laisa trumps Alys is something of a plot point in one of my many WIPs). I wonder about Fletchir Giaja as the King of Diamonds instead of Shiv, though Shiv certainly fits as well. And I love including Raven Durona.

Mark is inevitably the other joker. I'd love to see some art of him that includes Killer, Grunt, Gorge and Howl in some fashion.

Oh, yes, that would be perfect! I was trying to think of what would be equivalent to the split uniform on Miles for Mark and drawing a blank, but of course it's the Black Gang!

I hadn't thought of it that way when pondering this, but now that you mention it, I really like that if we go with Laisa as the ace od diamons, Laisa and Gregor are the same "rank" card and she "trumps" Alys as queen.

Part of my rationale behind Shiv as king of diamonds was amusement at having him and Alys share a suit, as "out-laws" ;) But, heh, it looks like my suggestions strip the deck of every single Ceta (my personal bias, no doubt, as I find Cetagandans kinda boring), so Fletchir Gaja is probably a more meaningful choice :)

Ah, looking again at the original, I see that the plan was for Diamonds to be the not-precisely-humans, the muties' suit. I like our plan better, but the original choices make more sense now.

Yeah, the diamonds theme in the original seems to be "trans-humans" or something, which is certainly a theme, but I don't know how it ties into the suit itself (while the other suits certainly seem to, at least the way I understand them). So I like ours better, too :)

That's a great idea, and the art is lovely. (I like some of your alternatives, too.)

But -- my Cyrillic is pretty rudimentary, but apparently at least in Russian our friend the Jack of Spades is [ʤɛs]? Really? I'd always thought of him as [gɛs]. I hate it when I internalize a "wrong" pronunciation for a name...it's hard to change.
philomytha: Beam me upphilomytha on March 25th, 2014 12:47 pm (UTC)
I say it somewhere in between the two, I think. I'm not sure the Russian is any more correct than [gɛs] is, though. I don't think it's a Russian name.
Her Hamsternesshamsterwoman on March 25th, 2014 05:39 pm (UTC)
I don't think it's a Russian name.

It's not, or at least not any Russian name I recognize. But I pronounce it [ʤɛs], too. I find I tend to default to that for anything that starts with g-e (only to find out it's wrong a lot of the time, like with LeGuin's Ged), and it seems to predate me learning Italian, where that's an actual rule, so it might be from the very early learning-English-in-Russia/as a second language? (and thus possibly relevant to how a Russian reader/translator might read it / might think it has to be read...)

These card suits aren't fully traditional, but they don't represent four different planets anyway. The scheme is: Hearts = Barrayaran, Spades = Villains, Diamonds = Mutants, and Clubs = Security. It determines Who is Who and specifies the choice of characters.

I understand, we were speculating about other ways it might also work. But yours are lovely!
