First off, someone writing AUish Vorkosigan ficlets. If it's possible to leave comments on tumblr, I can't figure it out, but I commend Alys, Simon and zombies to your attention, and also Simon's cover being blown by a small child.
And secondly, a Vorkosigan meme made by imperialgrunt, which makes me think tumblr must be a great place if only I could figure it out, if there are people making Vorkosigan memes there. It's one of those 30 Days memes, but I don't have the patience for 30 days, so here's the whole thing at once
Day 01: Which planet would you chose to live on?
First things: whichever planet I live on, I intend to travel a lot, because there's an awful lot to see. That means I'd better choose a well-connected planet. My instinct is for Escobar, because it seems like a comfortable place and it also has an outdoors, unlike Beta or Komarr or a lot of space stations. And it has a very pretty security headquarters, apparently, and water gardens. Earth also seems like it's still a great place to be, but it's not well placed for galactic travel.
I suspect if I lived on Barrayar lots of people would want to kill Philomythulus, so that's out.
Day 02: Favorite female character!
It really has to be Cordelia, doesn't it? I want to be Cordelia when I grow up.
Day 03: Favorite male character!
You can't ask that! Miles. Aral. Simon. Galeni. *head spinning emoticon*
Day 04: Favorite technology!
Well, uterine replicators look really good after my recent experiences. The not being able to walk or move without pain bit got old really fast, and though giving birth had the same kind of adrenalin thrill as running a marathon, it's not exactly the safest activity on the planet. Though there's something to be said for being extremely high on hormones when you first see your baby, but surely they have a medication for that on Beta.... I think terraforming technology would also be very useful, especially if we could use it to get our seasons back.
Day 05: Least favorite character.
I presume picking villains isn't quite fair? In terms of characters whose lives just don't hold my attention, possibly Kareen Koudelka. I'm sure I'd like her if I met her, but I don't have anything to say about her.
Day 06: Miles Naismith or Miles Vorkosigan?
I think that one's been answered pretty comprehensively by Memory. But I'd like to read more stories about Miles Naismith, because dammit he has a lot of fun.
Day 07: Favorite quote! (bwahhahaha)
Bwahhahaha indeed. This is one of those questions that needs to be subdivided:
quote most applicable to my life: You just go on
most moving quote: The good face pain. The great--they embrace it.
best line ever: Shopping.
Day 08: Character you’d want to have lunch with?
Lady Alys, of course. Second choice would be Piotr. Good conversationalists, good hosts, interesting lives. Not that I expect Alys talks about her life over lunch, but Piotr would.
Day 09: Favorite book!
How could it possibly be anything other than Memory? For a truly fantastic arc, for some of my favourite moments, for Simon and Alys, for everything.
Day 10: Least favorite book.
I don't have a least favourite book. Do I? Diplomatic Immunity is pretty weak, I guess, and so is Cryoburn in a different way, but tbh I don't always count them as part of the series, they're more appendices to it. Ivan's book is an appendix too, but it's full of Alys and Simon and wacky hijinks so I like it a lot more. I am allowed to be shallow about these things, aren't I?
Day 11: Who would you ship with yourself?
I can't answer that one! Besides, you all know that Illyan is my fictional boyfriend. But I'd certainly let Ivan take me out on a date, since I think he knows how to show a girl a good time (see above re shallowness). I'd go out on a date with Miles too, though I wouldn't care to guess where I'd wind up.
Day 12: Favorite moment in the series!
Another impossible question. Maybe if I could have one per book? I can't choose, so I'm going for the first one that comes into my head: 'Your lady mother gave me a map.' I adore that bit so much.
Day 13: Would you prefer a Vorkosigan movie that was accurate and direct-to-dvd, or a wildly successful but inaccurate screen adaptation?
An accurate movie, please, or better yet, a TV series. Though honestly, I think I'd prefer no movie at all, because the LotR movie butchered my love of the book and I would hate to have that happen again. I think I'd like to have a TV series about the adventures of the Dendarii mercenaries, with space battles and spying and epic adventures, and that could draw on the books while creating a new story. That would be cool.
Day 14: Favorite romantic relationship!
I'm not even going to bother with that one. You all know my answer anyway. *draws hearts around Alys and Simon*
Day 15: Least favorite relationship.
I don't know about least favourite, but I feel like I needed a bit more work to sell me on Ivan and Tej. Or By and Rish. They're both perfectly possible relationships, but the book never quite sold me on them. Or rather, that's not fair, because from most other authors I'd have taken it, but anyone who writes Aral and Cordelia is going to be held to a high bar for romantic relationship writing in future.
Day 16: The relationship you wished had happened!
Drou/Kareen. They so needed each other, and also they hit all my loyalty kinks square on.
Day 17: Favorite non-romantic relationship!
This is why I don't do these things day-by-day, because it's hardly worth answering this one. Besides, I already wrote my love song to them.
For the sake of variety I will also add Galeni's relationship with Barrayar (thank you, Lanna). With Miles, and Aral, and ImpSec, and Gregor, and - well, with Barrayar. I think it counts a non-romantic relationship...
Day 18: Who do you identify most with?
Ekaterin, I guess, even though I only have a green thumb if you count dandelions. But I do have a lot of stillness in me.
Day 19: If you could undo one thing happening….
I would make Miles and Ekaterin go through Have His Carcase before their Gaudy Night. I think it would make their relationship make more sense from Ekaterin's perspective, and it would mean I got another book out of it, so that's all to the good.
Day 20: Favorite enemy!
Ezar. Is he an enemy? I think you could make a case for him being the enemy in Shards. Failing that, I rather like the very upset engineers of Komarr. They're certainly my pick for Bujold villains I wouldn't mind being trapped in a lift with.
Day 21: Least favorite enemy.
I find it hard to get excited about the various Barons of Jackson's Whole. I think it's because they're so separate from the rest of the world: the Barrayaran and Komarran villains, and the Cetas, are all thoroughly embedded in the world and affect each other, but if the Barons didn't exist Barrayar would just keep on ticking. Apart from Mark, of course, but I expect Galen could have found some other crimelord to make him a clone.
Day 22: Your feelings on a complex character. (Bothari, Mark… or some other favorite)
Piotr! I love Piotr, the baby-killing old monster that he is. I would love the novel, or series, about his life, though I think it would be a much darker story than the rest of canon, with a lot fewer good choices and chances for honour. But he comes through it all and finds a measure of peace for himself.
Day 23: Saddest character death
Princess Kareen, by a mile. I'm not counting Aral's because he's still one of the fittest men over forty in his command really. But Kareen never got her story told.
Day 24: A minor character you wish got more time to shine!
Dono. I'd like to see more of Dono's adventures. Or Donna's. Also Kou. He sort of fades away after the Cordelia books, and I'd like more about him and his adventures.
Day 25: Unpopular opinion you hold (regarding a character, a book, or anything else!)
Do I have any unpopular opinions? I'm sure there are people to disagree with me about any given point, but most of my fannish opinions come out in my fics one way or another. Here are a few things I've seen people taking the other side of: I wouldn't choose to live on Barrayar, beautiful though it is to write about; I think Ezar could have found some way other than invading Escobar to sort out his problems; I like the fact that so many of Bujold's characters want to get married and have children.
Day 26: Would you rather be stationer or a groundsider?
I think I'm too outdoorsy a person to want to be a stationer for long, but it would be fascinating for a few months.
Day 27: Most shocking moment.
Miles's death halfway through a book seriously shocked me, first read through, because that just doesn't happen in books. I also can't quite believe that Bujold wrote an attempted rape of a ten-year-old and made me identify with the rapist. I guess that makes Mirror Dance the most shocking book.
Day 28: Song you associate with the Vorkosiverse!
The rock opera! (There are variously good translations in the comment threads there, as well as links to all the songs.) Also Tranent Muir, for Piotr.
Day 29: Favorite not-strictly-human?
All the quaddies. And Terrence Cee.
Day 30: Your perfect cast for your favorite book!
Oh heavens, I don't do casting. Though I have collected some odds and ends along the way: Judi Dench as older Alys; young Gregory Peck as Galeni; Ulrich Muhe as Illyan, and I'm very happy with younger Oliver Reed for Aral too.
